IOM Away Weekend - TRIP DETAILS NOW ADDED

Come join other members of the IOMYC as we look to visit further afield as a club, be it in a Motorboat, Rib, Sport Fisher or Yacht. We will be choosing the most appropriate venue nearer the time but eyes are set on Strangford Lough. Likely to be heading to Portaferry, at the southern end of the Ards Peninsula, near the Narrows at the entrance to Strangford Lough.

Sat 30/04 IOM to Portaferry

IOM HW 1138, Portaferry HW 1344,

Latest time to arrive at Portaferry is 1344 before tide turns. If you have not been to Strangford before be assured you are unlikely to make it to the marina in a sailboat after this time as tide in the narrows turns very quickly and current flows frighteningly fast.

Therefor skippers decide their own departure time based on speed of boat to be sure of arrival at entrance to the narrows for suggested time of 1230. Please note the passage is 35 mile trip via Calf Sound so at 5.5 knots allow for 6.5 hrs.

Tide through Sound will be against (only favourable from HW-2 to HW+3 0938 to 1438).

Sun 01/05 Portaferry to IOM,

LW Portaferry 0816 HW Portaferry 1420

Suggest leave Portaferry 0730 latest to get last of tide out of lock arriving IOM 1400 or depart 1420 or after to arrive IOM 2100. Once again for the uninitiated you won't get out of the narrows once the tide turns and its best to go down with the last of the ebb.

Jason has explored a number of options and it would be possible to go to Ardglass on Sunday for those want to extend the weekend.

At the moment I only have Ann and Jane confirmed for the trip on Cool Comfort so could potentially take a couple of others if they want a berth or more if they just come for a ride and stay at a B&B.
