RYA Youth Sailing Scheme Stage 4

17th April - 5 June 2023

Learn how to sail a double-handed boat as crew or helm and solve a variety of problems afloat.

These children will be expected to sail in windier and rougher conditions further out in the bay. This the last of the youth Sailing Scheme Courses and children should be becoming more independent in their sailing and equipment.

Required experience

Sailing skills to the standard of Stage 3

Minimum duration

Approximately 2 days, 16 hours or equivalent number of sessions

Content

Transferring pre-learnt skills, techniques and manoeuvres to sail crewed boats, enhance rigging, launching, recovery and practical skills to recover a man overboard.

Certificate issuing criteria

Can sail a double-handed boat on all points of sail. Launch and return to a beach, jetty or mooring in moderate conditions.

As this course is held in a small dinghy, children should wear:

- Swimming costume for underwear

- Wetsuit

-Waterproof/windproof jacket to keep the wind off the upper body

- Warm hat

- Shoes that can (and will) get wet

We suggest children wear a lycra skin or rash vest under the wetsuit, not a cotton t-shirt. Cotton remains wet and will prevent the wetsuit from warming the body.
